Start with the decision
Identify where the truck is located, where ownership will transfer, where it will be registered, whether it was imported, its configuration and intended commercial use.
Federal responsibilities
Transport Canada addresses federal vehicle safety and import matters. Border and tax processes may also apply. A model name or age alone does not establish import admissibility.
Provincial and territorial responsibilities
Registration, ownership transfer, vehicle inspection, plates/registered weight and carrier oversight are administered by the responsible jurisdiction. Select the destination province or territory below.
Ownership is not carrier authority
Buying and registering a truck does not by itself satisfy carrier registration, safety fitness, hours-of-service, trip inspection or operating obligations.
Truck capability is not route permission
Component ratings, axle count and engine power do not determine lawful weights or dimensions. Route, axle spacing, registered weight, season and permits can all matter.
Verify before acting
Reviewed September 4, 2026. Rules, fees, forms, inspection criteria and permit processes can change and may depend on vehicle configuration, use, weight, route and carrier status. Confirm the current requirement with the responsible authority. This editorial guide is not legal, tax, mechanical, safety or compliance advice.
