Collect configuration inputs
Document axle count and spacing, tire and component ratings, registered weight, measured gross and axle weights, trailer type, wheelbase, fifth-wheel position and any lift or steerable axles.
Add route and time
Province/territory, municipal roads, bridges, season, road bans and planned route can change what is allowed or which permit is required.
Separate physical rating from law
A manufacturer rating is not permission to operate at that weight. Conversely, a permit does not increase a component's safe rating.
Use official permit tools
Take the complete configuration and route to the responsible road authority or permit office. Do not rely on a generic national limit.
Verify before acting
Reviewed September 4, 2026. Rules, fees, forms, inspection criteria and permit processes can change and may depend on vehicle configuration, use, weight, route and carrier status. Confirm the current requirement with the responsible authority. This editorial guide is not legal, tax, mechanical, safety or compliance advice.
