CANADIAN OWNERSHIP & COMPLIANCE

British Columbia Semi-Truck Ownership & Commercial-Vehicle Guide

Use British Columbia's current official services for ownership, registration, inspection, weights and carrier obligations; do not import another province's process.

What is distinct in British Columbia

BC combines ICBC registration/insurance functions with separate CVSE commercial enforcement and permit responsibilities.

Ownership and registration

ICBC Autoplan brokers administer registration, licensing and insurance processes. Confirm transfer documentation and the correct vehicle/licence class.

Out-of-province and inspection

Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement and designated facilities administer relevant inspection programs; confirm out-of-province and periodic requirements.

Weights, dimensions and permits

Use BC Ministry of Transportation and CVSE routes, restrictions and permit tools; terrain, structures and seasonal limits can be material.

Carrier obligations are separate

National Safety Code certificate and carrier requirements are distinct from ICBC ownership transfer.

Buyer document file

Confirm seller authority, ownership documents, lien-search direction, VIN/build evidence, service history, inspection status, import status where relevant and written representations. Ask the authority which originals and forms are required.

Verify before acting

Reviewed September 4, 2026. Rules, fees, forms, inspection criteria and permit processes can change and may depend on vehicle configuration, use, weight, route and carrier status. Confirm the current requirement with the responsible authority. This editorial guide is not legal, tax, mechanical, safety or compliance advice.
