Scope
Tandem-drive and tri-drive tractor configurations used in Canadian highway, resource and heavy-spec work.
What the labels describe
A tandem drive commonly uses two powered rear axles; a tri-drive uses three. Lift axles, tag or pusher axles and axle-spacing arrangements are separate details that must be identified rather than inferred from a listing category.
Capacity and legal operation
Component ratings, axle spacing and suspension capacity do not by themselves establish legal operating weight. Provincial rules, routes, permits and the complete vehicle combination also matter.
Trade-offs
An additional drive axle can add traction and distribute load in a suitable application, while also adding tare weight, tire and driveline cost, turning scrub and mechanical complexity. Compare the work, trailer and jurisdictions before deciding.
Inspection priorities
Confirm axle tags, suspension model, inter-axle locks, driveline angles, tire matching, brake condition, frame and crossmembers. On a tri-drive, investigate abnormal tire scrub, driveline vibration and evidence of overloading or off-highway damage.
Treat the advertised specification as a lead
A listing can help identify the questions to ask, but component tags, certification labels, service evidence and the physical truck establish the working specification. Verify the VIN and factory build sheet for the individual truck.
- Match VIN and ownership records before comparing configuration
- Record engine, transmission and axle identifiers exactly
- Confirm wheelbase, fifth-wheel travel and trailer clearance
- Use a qualified independent inspection for condition and suitability
