Used emissions-era Class 8 trucks; procedures and components vary by engine, year and jurisdiction.
Build a dated service timeline
Record the date, kilometres, total and idle hours, complaint, diagnostic result, work performed and part numbers for each event. Missing intervals are questions, not automatic proof of neglect.
Separate maintenance from repair
Oil, filter and scheduled inspection entries show routine care. Fault diagnosis, forced regenerations, sensor replacement, DPF cleaning, dosing work, EGR repairs and major engine work should be recorded separately so repeat patterns remain visible.
Reconcile emissions evidence
Compare warning history, ECM or diagnostic reports, repair orders and current operation. Confirm that aftertreatment components remain present and appropriately repaired; clearing a code does not establish a completed repair.
Ask what the documents do not prove
An invoice does not prove the current condition of a component, and a clean dashboard does not prove the absence of stored or intermittent faults. Use an appropriate scan, cold start and loaded road test within a qualified inspection.
Treat the advertised specification as a lead
A listing can help identify the questions to ask, but component tags, certification labels, service evidence and the physical truck establish the working specification. Verify the VIN and factory build sheet for the individual truck.
- Match VIN and ownership records before comparing configuration
- Record engine, transmission and axle identifiers exactly
- Confirm wheelbase, fifth-wheel travel and trailer clearance
- Use a qualified independent inspection for condition and suitability
