Confirm the destination rules first
Before paying a deposit, contact the destination registry, transportation authority, insurer and tax adviser as appropriate. Ask which inspection, ownership, tax and document requirements apply to the exact commercial vehicle and intended use.
Match identity and authority to sell
Compare the VIN across the truck, ownership, bill of sale, lien search and build records. Confirm the seller's legal identity and authority to transfer the truck; a listing profile or invoice alone is not a registry search.
Plan inspection and movement
Determine whether the truck can be lawfully driven, needs temporary authority or should be transported. Keep a pre-purchase mechanical inspection separate from any required provincial safety or out-of-province inspection.
Budget the whole acquisition
Allow for travel, inspection, lien searches, tax, permits, transport, registration, immediate service, tires and repairs. A lower asking price in another province can be offset by unresolved documentation or condition.
Do not generalize one province's process
Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario and other jurisdictions publish different processes. Use current official instructions for the destination and transaction date, and obtain qualified advice for unusual ownership, import or tax questions.
