What the ratio represents
A rear axle ratio describes the relationship between driveshaft rotation and axle rotation. Conceptually, a 3.55 ratio turns the driveshaft about 3.55 times for one axle revolution. The number alone does not establish acceleration, fuel use or suitability.
RPM, gearing and tire interaction
Engine RPM at road speed depends on transmission gear ratio, rear axle ratio and loaded tire revolutions per kilometre. Tire size and wear change effective rolling circumference, while direct-drive and overdrive top gears change the calculation.
Startability, cruise and terrain
Deeper numerical gearing can change low-speed multiplication, while faster gearing can reduce cruise RPM in a suitable powertrain. Grade, load, start frequency, engine torque curve and transmission ratios all matter. A ratio such as 3.08 is not automatically best for highway work.
The complete configuration
Rear axle ratio should be evaluated as part of the complete engine, transmission, tire and intended-duty configuration. Confirm the axle tag and build information, then compare actual operating requirements rather than relying on a model badge.

Build information, component tags, service records, diagnostics and a qualified inspection take priority over general family-level guidance.
