Research the aluminium-cab conventional lineage without turning dated Australian test trucks or the verified 1991 final model year into unsupported first-year or exact-build claims.
FLC120 is part of Freightliner’s early aluminium-cab conventional history. A retrospective with Freightliner-supplied images documents the platform lineage and two 1982 Australian evaluation trucks, but it does not settle North American badge years.
Production-year boundaries are not sufficiently established for a complete model-year list. The labelled choices below filter documented milestones or references only; omitted years do not prove the model was unavailable. North American FLC120 introduction and exact build boundaries remain open. Earlier 1973/1974 platform lineage is not a verified FLC120 model-year range.
The factory VIN table establishes 1991 as the FLC120 final model year. A separately displayed NHTSA MY1997 API designation conflicts with that factory endpoint and is excluded from the selector pending reconciliation; it does not extend production. Exact last-build, order and glider boundaries remain open.

Aluminium conventional lineage
The documented cab lineage predates the dated FLC120 test trucks. Treat this as platform context until a factory FLC120 announcement or data book establishes badge timing.
This interval marks documented cab-platform context, not a verified FLC120 model-year run.

Heavy conventionals · acquisition-era architecture context
The acquisition record places Freightliner heavy conventionals in the North American long-haul market by August 1981. It remains broader architecture evidence and cannot set the FLC120 introduction or first model year.
Daimler-Benz’s 1981 annual report identifies heavy-duty conventionals as a principal Freightliner architecture at acquisition but supplies no FLC120 badge allocation.
Two right-hand-drive trucks reached Australia for evaluation. One is described with an NTC400 Cummins, 15-speed Roadranger, Rockwell SSHD axle and four-bag Airliner; the other with an NTC350, 15-speed Roadranger, Rockwell QR40 and four-spring suspension. Both sleepers were later additions, so these are individual-truck records rather than a sales specification.
The dated evidence covers two test trucks only; continuous availability before or after 1982 remains unresolved.
Freightliner records the aerodynamic FLD112 and FLD120 launch in 1987. That milestone supplies later-family context but not the exact FLC120 last build, order cut-off or overlap period; the final model year is separately verified as 1991.
The interval is a research window around the documented 1987 FLD launch, not a claimed FLC120 production range.

FLC120 Conventional
Freightliner’s VIN model table explicitly ends this named model entry at 1991MY. That closes the model-year endpoint only; the exact final build, order cut-off, glider history and regional continuations remain separate questions.
Freightliner explicitly labels the model entry “to” a stated model year and defines MY as Model Year. The June 2000 service-manual revision is retrospective identification evidence, not a production date.
The associated-product list makes the source-system conflict more explicit without extending chronology. It verifies the regulator labels, not a 1997 FLC120 build, availability record or revised endpoint.
The regulator designation conflict remains unresolved. NHTSA’s issue index confirms that FLC120 MY1997 and FLD120 MY1997 are grouped under the same 21-vehicle campaign, but supplies no model-level population or explanation; the factory to-91MY endpoint remains controlling.
Freightliner’s public history does not establish the first FLC120 model year. The final model year is separately verified as 1991 by the factory VIN table.
The factory VIN table says FLC120 Conventional “to 91MY.” It does not supply the first model year, last build day, order cut-off or a universal regional endpoint.
The NHTSA API label conflicts with Freightliner's explicit to-91MY factory endpoint. The factory boundary controls; no 1997 selector choice or production claim is created.

The public NHTSA vehicle query and issue index both carry an MY1997 FLC120 designation for campaign 98V001000, while the issue index also lists FLD120 MY1997 in the same 21-vehicle campaign. That grouping narrows the anomaly to regulator product taxonomy but does not validate MY1997 FLC120 production or displace Freightliner’s explicit to-91MY boundary.

The vehicle-specific query supplies the disputed FLC120/MY1997 designation, while the campaign record supplies only campaign-wide truck/tractor equipment, population and remedy provenance. It does not explain or validate the model label. Freightliner’s explicit FLC120 Conventional (to 91MY) factory boundary remains controlling; no 1997 selector choice, production extension or availability claim is created.
The official issue index groups both labels inside one 21-vehicle campaign but provides no FLC120-specific count, VIN list or explanation. Freightliner’s FLC120 Conventional “to 91MY” factory boundary remains controlling.

FLC120 evidence includes highway evaluation tractors and individual configurations. Confirm market, steering position, cab material, hood, wheelbase, axle arrangement and original fifth-wheel installation before comparing a truck.
Confirm build-specific combination, axle, tyre and coupling ratings, kingpin and service connections, clearance and actual axle weights. GVW is the loaded truck; GCW is the loaded combination. Neither is trailer payload.

How to read the evidence
Verified: primary evidence for the stated claim. Corroborated: independent supporting sources. Provisional: useful evidence needing confirmation. Unresolved: conflicting or insufficient evidence. A verified service document or announcement does not verify a production range.
Reference-specific values retain their edition. Build-specific values require a VIN or order record; transport dimensions may require physical measurement. Research intervals locate references, not continuous model-year availability. Reviewed 2026-09-29.
