How Much Does a Semi Truck Weigh Without a Trailer?

One documented example is 8,200 kg (about 18,078 lb): Freightliner’s April 2020 Australian Cascadia 126 day cab, calculated with fluids but without fuel, driver or passenger. That is a specific configuration, not a Canadian average. The weight of a truck you are buying depends on its build and what is aboard; request a recent uncoupled scale ticket with fuel, DEF, equipment and occupants recorded.

A documented diesel tractor example

Freightliner’s original specification sheet, published by its Australian distributor and hosted by Velocity Truck Centres, identifies this standard day cab. Its calculated tare includes all fluids except fuel and excludes driver and passenger. It is subject to variation, not a measured scale ticket.

Empty weight, ratings and combined weight are different

Volvo’s body-builder instructions define tare as a fully equipped truck ready for service without payload. The practical question is what was included when the truck was weighed. Sellers may use “dry”, “empty” and “curb” differently, so ask for the measurement basis rather than assume those labels are equivalent.

Empty weight, ratings and combined weight are different
Number suppliedWhat it representsCan it answer tractor-only weight?
Uncoupled scale ticketThe truck and everything on it at the weighing time.Yes, if identity, included equipment, fluids and occupants are recorded.
Manufacturer curb / tare figureA specified build under the manufacturer’s stated conditions.Only for that build and definition; verify changes since production.
GVWR / axle ratingsRated capacity, not mass sitting on the scale.No. Do not quote the rating as an empty weight.
Combination scale totalTractor, trailer, load and supplies present.No. Weigh uncoupled; trailer kingpin load is carried on the tractor while coupled.

Why day cab and sleeper weights differ

A sleeper adds accommodation, fittings and often climate-control equipment, but cab style is only one part of the build. A heavily equipped day cab can have more axles, heavier frame sections or hydraulic equipment than a highway sleeper. Compare actual build records and scale tickets; do not subtract one generic sleeper allowance.

  • Record engine and transmission, axle arrangement, frame and wheel equipment.
  • Include the fitted sleeper, APU or battery HVAC, headache rack, wet kit, hoses, chains, tools and spare parts.
  • Record the fuel and DEF level and whether the driver and other occupants were on the scale.
  • Keep seasonal equipment and later modifications in the comparison.

A scale-ticket example you can recalculate

Illustration only—not a measured truck or a market range: if an uncoupled tractor ticket shows 5,200 kg on the steer axle and 3,800 kg on the rear group, total scale weight is 9,000 kg (about 19,842 lb). It includes whatever was aboard at that weighing. The same two axle readings taken while a trailer is coupled do not establish empty tractor weight.

Weighing checklist

Use a suitable vehicle scale and follow the operator’s positioning instructions. Safe uncoupling requires an appropriate site and someone qualified to handle the equipment.

  • Confirm the tractor identity and remove the trailer from the measurement. Do not just remove the trailer load.
  • Keep the equipment that will travel with the truck aboard; document anything removed.
  • Record date, units, fuel/DEF level, occupants, axle readings and total. Keep the original ticket.
  • For transport as cargo, give the carrier that weight plus the actual exterior dimensions and ground clearance.
  • If two tickets disagree, check configuration, fluid level and scale procedure before treating the difference as a vehicle change.
  • For payload or legal operating questions, obtain the full tractor/trailer ratings, axle loads, coupling limits and applicable route rules; empty weight alone is insufficient.

What this guide does not claim

No current Canadian fleet-wide empty-weight range or verified weight for every model is established here. Manufacturer option lists and rated capacities cannot fill that gap. Use the weighing method for the actual truck, and use model references to identify equipment—not to manufacture a tare figure.
