Years & generations

Argosy is Freightliner’s highway cabover. North American complete trucks, export configurations and gliders require separate availability records.

Production-year boundaries are not sufficiently established for a complete model-year list. The labelled choices below filter documented milestones or references only; omitted years do not prove the model was unavailable. The MY1997 label is a contained pre-launch regulator conflict. The factory-complete 2006 endpoint is documented, while MY2007–MY2008 regulator labels do not establish complete-truck continuation; first/final model years, export production and glider endpoints remain unresolved.

Factory-complete Argosy production ended in calendar year 2006 according to DTNA. Export production and NAFTA glider availability continued, so 2006 is not applied as a universal family or final-model-year endpoint.

March 8, 1998 production start Corroborated

Argosy · series production begins

Daimler Truck gives March 8, 1998 as the Argosy series-production start. A dated 1999 report corroborates 1998 manufacture, while DaimlerChrysler's 1998 annual report separately confirms achieved market presence for the new heavy Argosy cabover. None establishes a first model year or FLB cutover.

The exact day comes from a September 2025 manufacturer retrospective. A March 1998 contemporary report separately records a midyear production forecast, while the August 1999 recall report corroborates actual 1998 manufacture. Forecast, actual production and model year remain distinct.

June 2, 2000 contemporary report Corroborated

Argosy · equipment-qualified MY1998–MY2000 recall checkpoint

This report supplies an additional bounded early-Argosy model-year checkpoint for certain power-outlet-equipped trucks. It does not reconcile the first North American model year, prove continuous 1998–2000 availability or establish any production endpoint.

A contemporary trade report explicitly identifies 1998–2000 Freightliner Argosy cabovers in an NHTSA recall context. Its model-year statement applies only to the described recall population and is not promoted to a family production span.

First North American model year
Not reconciled Unresolved

Introduction and first model year are separate events.

North American / export end dates
Not established here Unresolved

A 2015 manual is not evidence of a new North American truck offered that year.

Glider chronology control
Separate from factory-complete production Verified

The undated factory guide explicitly allows some older models as gliders and describes new VIN/model-year identities. It does not identify this family’s last complete truck or glider year.

Factory-complete production ended
2006 Corroborated

A named DTNA manager supplies the calendar-year complete-truck endpoint. This is not a final model year; NAFTA glider availability and complete export production continued separately.

Predecessor family
FLB Corroborated

The retrospective explicitly names FLB as the family replaced by Argosy. The March 1998 launch report identifies Argosy as Freightliner’s new cabover and forecasts midyear production; neither record proves when FLB orders or builds ended.

SpecificationDocumented value / configuration
Exact campaign identityArgosy · MY2014 · NHTSA 14V150000 / DTNA FL-661
Equipment / conditionCertain vehicles equipped with IMMI-brand L9 seat-belt buckles · after the release button is pressed, the latch plate can remain partly engaged and make the belt difficult to unlatch
Compliance / consequenceThe response says the condition fails FMVSS No. 209. Hindered emergency egress can increase injury risk.
Manufacturer remedyDTNA dealers were to inspect the buckle and replace it as necessary, free of charge; the response says the recall began May 22, 2014.
Original / expansion boundaryNHTSA identifies FL-661 as an expansion of 13V-604 / FL-654. The expansion is not merged into the original population or silently treated as a revision of each original row.
Response roster boundaryEight in-scope Freightliner rows are retained: 108SD, 122SD, Argosy, Cascadia, Columbia, Coronado and M2 as MY2014, plus 114SD as MY2015. Two Western Star rows remain outside these dossiers.
Manufacturing-window boundaryThe summary gives August 5–November 15, 2013 for the affected campaign population. It is not allocated to an individual family or row and is not a complete production range.
Population boundary938 vehicles across the complete 10-row expansion response. The figure is not allocated by family or model year and is not a production count.
Model-year boundaryThe exact model-year row is equipment-qualified campaign applicability, not a continuous availability statement or a first/final model year.
Evidence limitCampaign applicability establishes neither universal L9-buckle fitment, a family production quantity, exact first/final model year, last build, generation assignment, derivative equivalence nor successor relationship.

05 / POWERTRAIN & CHASSIS

Powertrain & chassis

Configuration and ratings require the individual factory build record. Read engine, gearbox and axle ratings together.

Numerical powertrain ratings need a dated configuration-specific source. Detroit Diesel Series 60 12.7 · 373 kW · Detroit Diesel Series 60 14.0 · 373 kW · Cummins 500 · 373 kW · Cummins 530 · 395 kW · Cummins 620 · 462 kW

Documented cab options

Confirm the original order.

Documented transmissions

Read the installed unit’s identification plate and build record.

Operating and identification reference. This edition does not establish North American 2015 production, a universal cab length, or a regional powertrain options list.

06 / IDENTIFICATION & BUYER RESEARCH

Identify and inspect the truck

Publication dates and launch milestones do not establish continuous model-year ranges. Match the VIN, production date and equipment era.

Reference milestones & edition links
Inspection and build evidence

Confirm original market, steering position and complete-truck versus glider history. Match cab tilt and access-step equipment to the operator manual. Cab replacements, grille changes and export registration dates can obscure the original build.

  • VIN-linked factory build record and production date
  • Engine and transmission identification plates
  • Axle ratings, tyre ratings and fifth-wheel installation
  • Physical measurements of the individual tractor

07 / TRANSPORT & TRAILER RESEARCH

Match the trailer to the whole truck.

A cabover’s cab-over-engine layout changes access and packaging relative to a conventional tractor. Evaluate actual cab, sleeper, wheelbase, coupling position and service connections before assuming a trailer fit. Export and North American configurations must be compared on their own records.

Pulling a trailer

Confirm build-specific combination, axle, tyre and coupling ratings, kingpin and service connections, clearance and actual axle weights. GVW is the loaded truck; GCW is the loaded combination. Neither is trailer payload.

Moving the tractor as cargo

Give the carrier measured length, exterior and mirror widths, height, ground clearance and transport weight. Assess deck access, breakover, loaded height and securement together.

There is no single “Argosy towing capacity”.

The model badge, artwork and catalogue option selectors cannot rate an individual combination. Obtain the actual build limits and scale weights.

Year boundaries still under research

  • First model year, FLB overlap, final model years and regional overlap still need dated model-specific evidence. The March 8, 1998 series-production start and 2006 factory-complete endpoint are documented separately.
  • Obtain final-model-year evidence, later export cab revision, and final export/glider production records. The 2006 factory-complete production endpoint is documented separately.
  • Add dated engines, transmissions and axle-layout tables by market. The February 1999 cab configurations and MY2000 recall checkpoint do not establish adjacent model years.
  • Add dated cab lengths, sleeper choices, engines and transmissions by market.
How to read the evidence

Verified: primary evidence for the stated claim. Corroborated: independent supporting sources. Provisional: useful evidence needing confirmation. Unresolved: conflicting or insufficient evidence. A verified service document or announcement does not verify a production range.

Reference-specific values retain their edition. Build-specific values require a VIN or order record; transport dimensions may require physical measurement. Research intervals locate references, not continuous model-year availability. Reviewed 2026-10-01.

Reference-specific evidence needed

  • Factory first and final North American model-year evidence.
  • Export cab revision and final production records.
  • Dated cab, sleeper, drivetrain and dimensional tables by region.
