01 / IDENTIFY THE TRUCK

Years & generations

Business Class / FL-Series is a family, not one specification. Factory service literature lists FL50, FL60, FL70, FL80, FL106 and FL112; the badge alone does not identify GVWR or a tractor configuration.

Production-year boundaries are not sufficiently established for a complete model-year list. The labelled choices below filter documented milestones or references only; omitted years do not prove the model was unavailable. FL50/60/70/80/106/112 have different individual histories.

Select a year, or explore the full family chronology below.

1982 Mercedes-Benz medium-duty integration context Corroborated

Medium-duty organization before Business Class

This is organizational prehistory, not an early Business Class model record. The original Business Class chronology remains controlled by the separate 1991 named-family evidence, and no FL-series badge is backdated to 1982.

Daimler-Benz’s 1982 annual report documents a Mercedes-Benz-badged 9–15-ton medium-duty operation integrated into Freightliner’s organization and separately identifies Freightliner-nameplate heavy-duty production.

December 3, 1990 VIN-code amendment Corroborated

Freightliner’s FL/MB short-conventional VIN-code group

The filing preserves a dated manufacturer-defined short-conventional identity group. It does not call the group Business Class, establish a production launch or prove that every coded identity was built or sold on the filing date.

Freightliner Corporation’s December 3, 1990 Part 565 amendment adds six literal short-conventional model/cab codes: FL60, FL70, FL80, MB60, MB70 and MB80.

Business Class · corporate development and market checkpoint

The 1991 corporate report corroborates the original Business Class family’s achieved market presence and joint development. It remains family-level evidence and does not assign introduction dates or equipment to any individual FL-Series derivative.

Daimler-Benz’s 1991 annual report explicitly names Business Class, describes joint development with Mercedes-Benz AG and records medium-heavy Classes 6 and 7 trucks joining Freightliner’s existing Class 8 range.

Which Business Class model?

The manufacturer’s coding guide distinguishes these badges. Its 2019 revision retains historical codes; it does not establish 2019 model availability. Class designations identify coding categories, not the exact rating of an individual vehicle.

FL50

The VIN table includes FL50 in classes 4 through 7. Do not assign one payload or a common introduction date to every FL50 configuration.

FL60

FL60 has separate class 5, 6 and 7 coding. A visually similar cab does not make an FL70 or FL80 axle and chassis sheet applicable.

FL70

FL70 appears in classes 6 through 8. Identify actual axle, tyre and certification ratings before comparing a single-axle delivery truck with a heavier vocational chassis.

FL80

FL80 is recorded in classes 6, 7 and 8, with separate glider coding. Read the dedicated FL80 history for the provisional production range and later-catalogue question.

Open FL80 years and reference →

FL106

The guide gives FL106 its own model codes across classes 6 through 8 and a glider category. Keep the original FL106 distinct from the later M2 106 programme.

FL112

FL112 has separate regular and glider coding. Preserve the full name: FL112, FLD112 and M2 112 belong to different reference paths.

05 / POWERTRAIN & CHASSIS

Powertrain & chassis

Configuration and ratings require the individual factory build record. Read engine, gearbox and axle ratings together.

Numerical powertrain ratings need a dated configuration-specific source.

Documented cab options

Confirm the original order.

Documented transmissions

Read the installed unit’s identification plate and build record.

Operating and identity reference. It is not a sales catalogue or proof that all named models shared one engine, cab, rating or production period.

06 / IDENTIFICATION & BUYER RESEARCH

Identify and inspect the truck

Publication dates and launch milestones do not establish continuous model-year ranges. Match the VIN, production date and equipment era.

Reference milestones & edition links
Inspection and build evidence

Read the full badge and VIN, photograph the vehicle and engine labels, and compare the original body order with current equipment. Pay particular attention to straight-truck conversions and removed or added axles.

  • VIN-linked factory build record and production date
  • Engine and transmission identification plates
  • Axle ratings, tyre ratings and fifth-wheel installation
  • Physical measurements of the individual tractor

07 / TRANSPORT & TRAILER RESEARCH

Match the trailer to the whole truck.

The original Business Class range includes many body and chassis applications. Fifth-wheel instructions in a family manual do not certify every model for tractor service. Identify the actual truck before using combination-rating guidance.

Pulling a trailer

Confirm build-specific combination, axle, tyre and coupling ratings, kingpin and service connections, clearance and actual axle weights. GVW is the loaded truck; GCW is the loaded combination. Neither is trailer payload.

Moving the tractor as cargo

Give the carrier measured length, exterior and mirror widths, height, ground clearance and transport weight. Assess deck access, breakover, loaded height and securement together.

Deck height & loaded height ↗
There is no single “Business Class / FL-Series towing capacity”.

The model badge, artwork and catalogue option selectors cannot rate an individual combination. Obtain the actual build limits and scale weights.

Year boundaries still under research

  • First and final model years, exact factory build cut-offs and regional overlap still need dated model-specific evidence.
  • Resolve individual original FL-Series-to-M2 model mappings, last orders, final builds and exact overlap; the gradual programme-level succession is documented.
  • FL50 late-1994 introduction timing is now factory-retrospective; its exact first model year/build and FL60/FL70 launch dates remain open. All original FL-Series final dates still require factory evidence.
How to read the evidence

Verified: primary evidence for the stated claim. Corroborated: independent supporting sources. Provisional: useful evidence needing confirmation. Unresolved: conflicting or insufficient evidence. A verified service document or announcement does not verify a production range.

Reference-specific values retain their edition. Build-specific values require a VIN or order record; transport dimensions may require physical measurement. Research intervals locate references, not continuous model-year availability. Reviewed 2026-09-30.

Reference-specific evidence needed

  • Separate model introduction and final-year evidence.
  • Factory data books for FL50/60/70/80/106/112.
  • Reconcile M2 replacement and regional overlap.
