01 / IDENTIFY THE TRUCK

Years & generations

FL112 is an original Business Class model. It is distinct from the aerodynamic FLD112 and the later M2 112; a missing letter in a listing can send research to the wrong truck.

Production-year boundaries are not sufficiently established for a complete model-year list. The labelled choices below filter documented milestones or references only; omitted years do not prove the model was unavailable. Earlier 1991 family context does not establish FL112 availability. MY2000 is an exact identity checkpoint, not an endpoint. Sparse MY2003–MY2007 regulator checkpoints are independently bounded identities, not a continuous range, final model year, endpoint or exact M2 112 transition.

Select a year, or explore the full family chronology below.

Business Class service and VIN references Verified

Identify the original FL112

Factory literature includes FL112 in the FL-Series group. The VIN guide distinguishes regular models and glider coding; the type of vehicle and its registration history need to be established before assigning a year.

1991–2006 is a broad research starting window for unresolved original-family coverage, not verified FL112 production.

FL112 · Mexican-market launch checkpoint

The release supports a bounded Mexican-market checkpoint only. It does not establish U.S. or Canadian availability, an exact first model year, continuous production, achieved mid-1997 assembly or a final year.

Freightliner explicitly included this model in the full Business Class line stated for Mexican availability beginning January 1997.

FL112 Mexican sales and support checkpoint

The January release corroborates regional programme intent and support infrastructure only. It does not prove a completed sale, build, local-assembly start, model-year boundary or North American-wide availability.

Freightliner explicitly named FL112 among the Business Class products it said would be sold in Mexico beginning in January 1997.

FL112 · Caterpillar cooling-system change

Freightliner bulletin 20-37 separates covered Business Class FL112 trucks built before November 13, 1998 from vehicles built after that date, which received a revised upper radiator pipe. The distinction is limited to Caterpillar C10/C12 installations.

A dated Freightliner service bulletin explicitly identifies the affected model, engine scope and build-date breakpoint. It does not establish the FL112 production range or every 1998 configuration.

05 / POWERTRAIN & CHASSIS

Powertrain & chassis

Set-back front axle · single-drive 4x2 day-cab tractor orientation. Read engine, gearbox and axle ratings together.

Numerical powertrain ratings need a dated configuration-specific source.

Documented cab options

  • Day cab
  • 58 in SleeperCab
  • 58 in Mid-Roof
  • 48 in Raised Roof

Documented transmissions

Read the installed unit’s identification plate and build record.

The factory catalogue establishes a 112-inch BBC and multiple cab choices. The accepted illustration is narrower: a single-drive 4x2 day-cab tractor, not a universal rendering of every catalogue configuration.

06 / IDENTIFICATION & BUYER RESEARCH

Identify and inspect the truck

Publication dates and launch milestones do not establish continuous model-year ranges. Match the VIN, production date and equipment era.

Reference milestones & edition links
Inspection and build evidence

Preserve the complete model designation. Inspect factory identification and current assembly plates, including glider or replacement-component history. Confirm that a seller’s FL112 description has not omitted the D from FLD112 or the M2 prefix.

  • VIN-linked factory build record and production date
  • Engine and transmission identification plates
  • Axle ratings, tyre ratings and fifth-wheel installation
  • Physical measurements of the individual tractor

07 / TRANSPORT & TRAILER RESEARCH

Match the trailer to the whole truck.

An FL112 may be researched for a vocational body or tractor application, but its name alone cannot establish the original configuration. Identify market, chassis order and any conversion before comparing trailer suitability.

Pulling a trailer

Confirm build-specific combination, axle, tyre and coupling ratings, kingpin and service connections, clearance and actual axle weights. GVW is the loaded truck; GCW is the loaded combination. Neither is trailer payload.

Moving the tractor as cargo

Give the carrier measured length, exterior and mirror widths, height, ground clearance and transport weight. Assess deck access, breakover, loaded height and securement together.

Deck height & loaded height ↗
There is no single “FL112 towing capacity”.

The model badge, artwork and catalogue option selectors cannot rate an individual combination. Obtain the actual build limits and scale weights.

Year boundaries still under research

  • First and final model years, exact factory build cut-offs and regional overlap still need dated model-specific evidence.
  • Resolve North American versus export availability and glider history.
  • Add other engine/transmission editions and resolve the first/final model years. The November 1998 pipe breakpoint applies only to Caterpillar C10/C12 installations.
  • Establish whether M2 112 was explicitly the FL112’s corresponding successor and document last FL112 orders, first M2 112 builds and actual production overlap.
How to read the evidence

Verified: primary evidence for the stated claim. Corroborated: independent supporting sources. Provisional: useful evidence needing confirmation. Unresolved: conflicting or insufficient evidence. A verified service document or announcement does not verify a production range.

Reference-specific values retain their edition. Build-specific values require a VIN or order record; transport dimensions may require physical measurement. Research intervals locate references, not continuous model-year availability. Reviewed 2026-09-30.

Reference-specific evidence needed

  • Additional dated FL112 engine and transmission order editions beyond the September 1997 factory page.
  • First and final North American model years and export distinctions.
  • Factory evidence for the transition to M2 112.
