STERLING FAMILY REFERENCE

Sterling Condor

Condor was a shared Freightliner/Sterling low-cab-forward vocational platform with American LaFrance development and manufacturing at its core. Sales badge, physical manufacturer, WMI and model year must be read separately.

YEARS & TECHNICAL ERAS

Follow the dated evidence

Corporate production dates, model years and individual factory-code availability are not interchangeable.

VERIFIED

Public introduction and production start

Condor was introduced publicly in 2000 and production activity began late that year. The Sterling model-year envelope begins at MY2001; late-calendar-2000 build activity is not presented as categorical MY2000 evidence.

VERIFIED

Shared Sterling/Freightliner vocational programme

American LaFrance developed and manufactured the shared platform, sold under Sterling and Freightliner badges. The 68-inch BBC, setback front axle, aluminum cab, 4x2/6x4 layouts and TufTrac vocational context define the launch architecture.

CORROBORATED

American LaFrance ownership transition

Freightliner sold American LaFrance in December 2005. Physical-manufacturing records separate Freightliner/Sterling builds through December 14 from later American-LaFrance-manufactured chassis, while Sterling badge/model identity continued into MY2007.

VERIFIED

Platform continuation is not Sterling continuation

Later Freightliner- and American-LaFrance-badged Condors exist. They document the platform's life, not Sterling MY2008–2010 production.

Low-cab-forward vocational architecture

The launch Condor combines a 68-inch BBC, setback front axle, aluminum tilt cab, low entry, broad visibility, tight wheel cut and body-builder packaging. TufTrac vocational suspension supported severe applications. This is not primarily a highway-tractor reference.

Launch and later powertrain evidence

Launch families include Caterpillar 3126, C10 and C12 plus Cummins ISC, ISL and ISM. Later real vehicles add examples such as Cummins ISL and Caterpillar C10/C13. Every application remains tied to its year and source; the broader post-transition ALF manual is not projected backward across every Sterling year.

Allison prominence, not exclusivity

Allison automatics were central to Condor vocational specification. Manual capability also existed depending on year and application, so “every Condor used an Allison” is not supported.

LNG and natural-gas Condors

Sterling offered genuine LNG and natural-gas/CNG Condor configurations. This alternative-fuel history belongs to municipal and refuse applications and is distinct from a universal diesel specification.

Why a Sterling can have a 5SX VIN

A MY2007 Sterling Condor can carry an American LaFrance 5SX WMI after the manufacturing transition. That does not automatically make the badge false or the VIN wrong. Record sales badge, physical manufacturer, WMI, model year and platform as separate fields.

T-2 remains separate

T-2 Low Cab Forward is a separate Sterling regulatory/model identity. It does not extend Condor backward, supply Condor dimensions or share this canonical page.

OWNER / BUYER CHECK

Identify the individual truck

  1. Confirm the Sterling sales badge independently from the physical manufacturer and WMI.
  2. Treat 5SX as a possible American LaFrance manufacturing identity on a legitimate MY2007 Sterling Condor.
  3. Record 4x2 or 6x4, body installation, fuel system and actual powertrain from the build.
  4. Do not use later Freightliner or American LaFrance Condors to extend Sterling beyond MY2007.
  5. Keep T-2 records outside the Condor family.

Precision graphic intentionally withheld

Sourced BBC or wheelbase figures may be useful, but they do not complete an A–H reference. No missing width, height, overhang, frame or fifth-wheel geometry is inferred from artwork or an adjacent Sterling family.
