A0 · launch architecture
Unveiled in September 1999 and produced from April 2000, the launch Acterra used a Business Class-derived chassis and a 106-inch-BBC conventional cab. MY2000 vehicles exist.
STERLING FAMILY REFERENCE
Acterra was Sterling's 106-inch-BBC conventional family, spanning medium-duty and Class 8 work in truck and tractor configurations. Its family chronology is broader than the verified endpoint of any one M-code.

YEARS & TECHNICAL ERAS
Corporate production dates, model years and individual factory-code availability are not interchangeable.
Unveiled in September 1999 and produced from April 2000, the launch Acterra used a Business Class-derived chassis and a 106-inch-BBC conventional cab. MY2000 vehicles exist.
A documented chassis programme changed the frame, front and rear suspension, component packaging, fuel-tank choices and body-installation/service architecture. It is a technical era, not proof of a completely new visible cab generation.
The 163-inch-BBC Crew Cab arrived in 2003. Factory AWD was announced and orderable in 2004. A later Extended Cab is documented without an exact first/final model-year claim here.
Late factory material uses CE, CF, CG and CH weight-class coding and documents Cummins and Mercedes-Benz engine families. A VIN-backed MY2010 Acterra proves family existence, not MY2010 availability for every M5500–M8500 identity.
CONFIGURATION IDENTITY
| Identity | Reference meaning | Use limit |
|---|---|---|
| M5500 | 106 in BBC · Class 5 launch role; final MY unresolved | Confirm year, axle layout and build record before applying specifications. |
| M6500 | 106 in BBC · Class 6-type launch role; final MY unresolved | Confirm year, axle layout and build record before applying specifications. |
| M7500 | 106 in BBC · heavier configuration; MY2009 verified | Confirm year, axle layout and build record before applying specifications. |
| M8500 | 106 in BBC · Class 8-capable; MY2009 verified | Confirm year, axle layout and build record before applying specifications. |
| CE / CF / CG / CH | Later weight-class VIN codes; not a one-to-one M-code translation | Confirm year, axle layout and build record before applying specifications. |
| Crew Cab | 163 in BBC · body configuration introduced 2003 | Confirm year, axle layout and build record before applying specifications. |
| Extended Cab | Later documented body configuration; exact year span unresolved | Confirm year, axle layout and build record before applying specifications. |
M5500, M6500, M7500 and M8500 describe the launch hierarchy. Later CE/CF/CG/CH coding organizes weight classes differently; it is not treated as a simple one-to-one renaming. M7500 and M8500 are verified through MY2009, while M5500 and M6500 endpoints remain unresolved.
Acterra was not only a medium-duty straight truck. Dated government and factory evidence supports truck and tractor forms, single- and tandem-rear configurations and AWD vocational coding. The individual VIN and build record still control the actual duty and ratings.
The standard conventional uses the strongly established 106-inch BBC. Crew Cab is a 163-inch-BBC body configuration, not a separate family. Extended Cab belongs in the same family but lacks a closed production-year envelope.
Launch evidence includes Mercedes-Benz MBE900, Cummins ISB and ISC, and Caterpillar 3126B applications. Late factory/VIN material identifies Cummins ISC and ISB plus MBE900 variants. Transmission families likewise depend on year and configuration; these are not combined into one universal all-years option list.
Commercial databases have sometimes called Japanese-built JLS vehicles “M6500 Acterra.” That VIN pattern belongs to the Mitsubishi-Fuso-derived Sterling 360 architecture, not normal Acterra lineage, and is excluded from Acterra evidence.
OWNER / BUYER CHECK
Sourced BBC or wheelbase figures may be useful, but they do not complete an A–H reference. No missing width, height, overhang, frame or fifth-wheel geometry is inferred from artwork or an adjacent Sterling family.
