L8 and XL8 are different Canadian work-truck platforms. The main choice is the complete chassis and application, including single-rear-axle versus tandem layout.

Key buying questionCan the body and load fit the single axle?Does the work justify the tandem chassis?

Define the job before choosing the axle layout

List freight density, terrain, site access and any equipment operated while stationary. The body builder should review axle loading and mounting requirements on the selected chassis. Tandem hardware changes tire and maintenance requirements as well as the way the vehicle fits into yards; it is not simply a higher number on the badge.

Keep historical XL8 configurations separate

Hino’s MY2023 Canadian announcement included both 4×2 and 6×4 straight-frame XL8 configurations. The MY2027 brochure reviewed here describes the 6×4. Identify the year and axle layout of a used XL8 before using this comparison. Neither model’s gross vehicle rating supplies an approved trailer weight.
