BUYER RESEARCH · REVIEWED SEPTEMBER 9, 2026
These selectable sheets use Peterbilt’s retained product page as reviewed September 9, 2026. It is an option catalogue, not a specification for every 579 production year. The separate new-579 brochure illustrates the later cab and aerodynamic package.
| Question | Documented reference | Buyer interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Hood choices | 118 or 124 in BBC | 2,997 or 3,150 mm. Verify the actual hood and bumper; this is not overall tractor length. |
| Sleeper choices | 44, 58, 72, 80 in discrete and 80 in UltraLoft | Discrete sleepers and the integral UltraLoft have different layouts; match the installed design. |
| Diesel powertrain | MX-11, MX-13 or X15; manual and automated choices | The website also discusses natural-gas engines. The diesel references here do not describe those installations or every possible engine/transmission pairing. |
When comparing two 579s, establish the production date and cab/sleeper design before comparing advertised space. Record the full gearbox model and identify the actual axle and suspension: a front-axle catalogue range is not the truck’s certification rating. During inspection, check the sleeper seals and climate equipment and ask how damaged fairings, sensors or cameras were repaired and calibrated where fitted.

05 / PUTTING IT TO WORK
Day-cab and sleeper builds serve fleet, regional and long-haul work with different wheelbases, tanks, driver systems and axle ratios.
Start with deck length, load placement, axle distribution and cab-to-trailer clearance.
Read the guide HIGHWAYTRAILERS.CACompare deck height, gooseneck geometry and the loaded combination’s height.
Read the guide HIGHWAYTRAILERS.CACheck neck compatibility, fifth-wheel loading, wet-kit requirements and the complete axle layout.

Read the guideConfirm build-specific combination, axle, tyre and coupling ratings, kingpin and service connections, clearance and actual axle weights. GVW is the loaded truck; GCW is the loaded combination. Neither is trailer payload.
Give the carrier measured length, exterior and mirror widths, height, ground clearance and transport weight. Assess deck access, breakover, loaded height and securement together.
