Sterling Atego — North American Programme & Factory Model Reference
Sterling factory literature recognizes Atego 6500, 7500 and 8500 identities, and contemporary reporting documents a North-Americanized Mercedes-Benz Atego programme prepared for Sterling badging. Launch was on hold, and current evidence does not establish a normal continuous dealer-series production history.

YEARS & TECHNICAL ERAS
Follow the dated evidence
Corporate production dates, model years and individual factory-code availability are not interchangeable.
VERIFIED
Factory Atego identities enter Sterling technical literature
Sterling's revised VIN structure defines B7/B8 for Atego 6500 complete/glider, B9/CA for 7500 complete/glider and CB/CD for 8500 complete/glider. The table proves formal model identities, not that every code entered production.
VERIFIED
North American programme ready, launch on hold
A contemporary Freightliner executive briefing identifies North American versions of the European low-COE Atego as ready for a planned Sterling-badged low-cabover programme, while stating that launch plans were on hold.
VERIFIED
Codes persist in the commercial VIN-reference universe
NICB tables retain all six Atego codes in MY2006–2009 reference columns and show dashes for MY2010. Code retention supports decoder chronology only; it does not prove annual assembly, retail availability or a continuous production range.
UNRESOLVED
Normal series production remains unverified
No accepted factory brochure, price book, dealer advertisement, fleet procurement record, verified auction vehicle, certification label or owner documentation establishes an ordinary Sterling Atego dealer series.

Historical reference, not an invented production range
Atego belongs in Sterling's historical taxonomy because both the corporate programme and factory identities are documented. SemiTrucks.ca does not assign an exact first year, final year or continuous model-year range because built-vehicle and retail evidence has not been established.
Complete-truck and glider codes
B7, B9 and CB are the 6500, 7500 and 8500 complete-truck identities. B8, CA and CD are their glider identities. Reserved or retained codes do not demonstrate that customer trucks or gliders were assembled and sold.
Mercedes-Benz relationship
The strongest evidence supports a North-Americanized programme based around the European Mercedes-Benz Atego concept and intended for Sterling badging. European Atego specifications, engines, dimensions and production history are not silently transferred to the proposed Sterling versions.
Manufacturer and plant remain unresolved
The Sterling/Daimler programme identity and intended North American product are established, but no verified Atego build record identifies a physical series-production manufacturer or plant. Generic Sterling WMI and plant tables do not justify a St. Thomas assembly claim.
Engine and transmission matrices withheld
Sterling-wide VIN literature lists Caterpillar, Cummins, Mercedes-Benz/MBE and Detroit engine codes, while other Sterling families used Eaton and Allison transmissions. None of that proves an Atego-specific order matrix. No North American Sterling Atego engine or transmission is assigned here.
Dimensions, paint and artwork remain on hold
The COE form is verified, but North American cab width, BBC-equivalent, wheelbases, overall height, exterior treatment and paint palette are unresolved. European donor dimensions cannot support a Sterling A–H guide, and no speculative rebadge artwork is used as a production hero.
Adjacent Sterling families stay separate
Cargo/SC-Series, Condor, Acterra, Sterling 360, T-2 and MB80 are separate identities. In particular, the Fuso-derived Sterling 360 is not a later Atego generation and does not supply Atego production evidence.
OWNER / BUYER CHECK
Identify the individual truck
Treat B7/B8/B9/CA/CB/CD as documented factory identities, not automatic proof of a built truck.
Separate complete-truck codes from their glider counterparts.
Require an independent build sheet, certification label, period sale or physical-vehicle record before claiming production.
Do not infer an Atego plant or WMI from Sterling-wide decoder tables.
Do not import European Atego engines, transmissions, dimensions or paint as North American Sterling specifications.
Keep Cargo, Condor, Acterra, 360, T-2 and MB80 evidence outside this family.
A–H DIMENSION GUIDEHOLD
Precision graphic intentionally withheld
Sourced BBC or wheelbase figures may be useful, but they do not complete an A–H reference. No missing width, height, overhang, frame or fifth-wheel geometry is inferred from artwork or an adjacent Sterling family.
