HINO RESEARCH / Model history

Hino model generations and Canadian naming guide

Keep three identifiers together when researching a Hino: the sales name, the factory chassis code and the dated Canadian reference. Similar badges across years or markets can describe different equipment.

The engine transition is a dated event

In March 2021 Hino Canada announced plans to introduce Cummins-powered L and XL trucks. The announcement describes an introduction schedule; it does not identify the engine in every truck built around that period. Read the engine plate and original build record before assigning either a Hino J-series or Cummins engine to a used vehicle.

XL8 configuration changed across references

The September 2021 announcement for MY2023 included 4×2 and 6×4 XL8 straight-frame configurations. The MY2027 Canadian brochure reviewed for this library focuses on the tandem. An older single-axle XL8 should therefore remain a distinct build rather than being overwritten with current tandem specifications.

Other names need their own evidence

Advertisements may use additional historical or international Hino names. This Canadian collection does not equate an overseas 300, 500 or 700 badge, a US-market offering or a hybrid suffix with a reviewed Canadian chassis. Obtain the exact market’s literature and import or registration evidence before treating any such vehicle as equivalent.
