Define the body’s demands
Describe load density, loading method, stationary equipment and access constraints before choosing the chassis. Ask the installer to verify frame suitability, mounting points, axle loading and service access. A body that fits physically may still be unsuitable for the intended working load.
Single rear axle and tandem choices
The reviewed L Series and XL8 references offer different starting points. Compare the axle layout and chassis rating against the duty, then include tires, suspension and service access in the ownership assessment. The XL8’s Class 8 classification does not by itself make the truck a highway tractor.
Treat trailer use as a separate question
A truck’s GVWR is not its combination rating. If the work includes a trailer, obtain the approved GCWR, hitch or fifth-wheel installation evidence and applicable axle and operating limits. The spec sheets here do not calculate towing capacity from engine power or rear-axle capacity.
