Suffix and rating are part of the identity
The 2020 Canadian 258U high-power sheet identifies a 7.7-litre J08E-VB. The conventional body-builder manual also distinguishes J08E-WU and J08E-VB installations. Preserve those identifiers when comparing a truck with an advertisement, service invoice or replacement engine; one family label is not a universal rating.
Separate legacy Hino power from later Cummins power
Hino’s 2021 announcement introduced a different Canadian powertrain plan for L and XL Series trucks. Do not transfer those Cummins specifications into a 258, 268, 338 or 358 record. Confirm what is actually installed and investigate any discrepancy between the vehicle documentation and engine plate.
Build a service-history picture
Collect maintenance and diagnostic records, total and idle hours, cooling-system work and aftertreatment repairs. For a body that uses engine-driven equipment, include operating history beyond road kilometres. Check Hino’s Canadian VIN service and ask a dealer for the campaign and coverage position for that particular truck.
